1975 Wood Memorial
1976 Suburban Handicap
The Wood Memorial has long been a top 'prep' race for the Kentucky Derby, and a very important race for any 3 year old colt to win. As would be the case in the Derby, speed horse Bombay Duck leads the way, but despite breaking from an outside post
Foolish Pleasure has the speed to gain good position down the backstretch. He makes up ground around the turn and his relentless pursuit gets him to the
wire first, setting a new stakes record. This win and his Championship 2 year old season takes him to the Derby as the favorite.
For me, this was one of the greatest races ever. A small field went to the post because the mighty Forego was running. Forego was one of racings greatest handicap horses, collecting several Eclispe award Championships. He was simply awesome, and a favorite of mine. Forego stood 17 hands tall to Foolish Pleasure's 15.2 hands tall, but on this race day, Foolish Pleasure stood hands above him. Watch as the little horse grabs the lead, holds it and grinds away in the stretch refusing to give up his place in history, beating Forego in one of the most thrilling stretch drives ever. It was outstanding!!
Here you'll view two more Foolish Pleasure races. The prestigious Wood Memorial, and the 1976 Suburban Handicap.
The descriptions are once again in my own words.
